As many as 150 different species of birds visit the largely unspoilt River Deben during the year. Here they can find food, shelter and suitable habitats for breeding. The Summer and Winter bird populations are varied due to the differing seasons bringing a diverse quantity of species to the area. This means that at most times of the year there are a range of birds to be seen from the Tide Mill. On either side of low tide the abundant river mud which is exposed in front of the Tide Mill provides a rich source of food for wading birds such as Godwits, Curlews and Dunlins.
Funding from the AONB (Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty) Suffolk Coast and Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund has enabled us to work with RSPB Minsmere, Kyson School and RSPB Woodbridge to provide binoculars, information boards and reference books that help visitors better understand the surrounding birds.
