Basic CMYKFollowing an assessment of Woodbridge Tide Mill in September, it has been confirmed that it has been awarded Charter Panel approved accreditation at Gold Level.

The Carbon Charter is awarded to companies that are monitoring and reducing their carbon emissions; it is intended to provide public recognition of those involved in making Suffolk the Greenest County. The Gold Charter is only awarded to those demonstrating significant reductions in carbon emissions and championing the environmental agenda.

The Panel was very impressed with Woodbridge Tide Mill’s creation of a ‘Green attraction’ in Suffolk. It’s the carbon footprint as a flour mill is less than half the industry norm. The panel were also impressed with the Tide Mill’s links with local bakers and farm shops to help create a local food economy, and their education of visitors on the value and history of tidal power. 7

Nigel Barratt, Miller and Trustee of Woodbridge Tide Mill, said: “This is another feather in the Tide Mill’s cap. It is a remarkable building that exists purely as a result of tidal power. The beautiful old Mill performs many a useful function in this community including; milling flour, attracting visitors and, of course, keeping us in touch with our heritage. We’re very proud that The Carbon Charter have chosen to recognise it for its environmental significance.”

The Woodbridge Shuck Shellfish Festival launched in style today with a champagne reception at Woodbridge Tide Mill. The much loved food festival returns to celebrate all local produce, not purely local shellfish, for a fourth consecutive year from 8 – 11 October.

Many of the festival sponsors and local dignitaries gathered for a glass of Champagne and some oysters to celebrate the opening of the festival. Sponsors this year include: Adnams, The Suffolk Coast DMO, Choose Woodbridge, Infotex, Cornerstone Estate Agents, Simpers of Suffolk, The Crown, The Tea Hut and Bespoke Events – who catered the launch party using Simpers delicious shellfish with Frere-Jean Frere sponsoring the champagne

Nigel Barratt, Miller and Trustee of Woodbridge Tide Mill, welcomed guests and thanked the sponsors, handing over to Robert Simper to provide the context of the festival. All that remained was for a shuck-related limerick from Woodbridge Mayor, Josh Sayles, and the festival was officially underway.

Local historian and expert speaker, Mark Mitchels, drew well over 100 people to his insightful illustrated talk on The Duke of Wellington at Woodbridge Community Hall on Friday 2nd October. Through ticket sales and a raffle the event raised over £700 for Woodbridge Tide Mill.

Nigel Barratt, Miller and Trustee of Woodbridge Tide Mill, said: “A fantastic event thanks to Mark Mitchels who has proved yet again he can draw a crowd with his choice of subject and wealth of knowledge. A big thank you to everyone who contributed and helped, whether cooking and providing the nibbles, manning the raffle, or moving chairs and tables on the night – And, of course, to all those who supported the Tide Mill by coming along.”
