It’s always nice when our achievements are recognised by the local press. We have enjoyed another remarkably successful year and thanks must go to the dozens of volunteers and Friends of the Tide Mill for making it possible. We could not have done it without you so thank you all!

Three film students from University Campus Suffolk have been busy working on the production of three films of the Mill. Andrew Derbyshire approached us in October with the following request, “We have an assignment this term to produce a short documentary film. We would be split into groups of about four students – each group doing their own separate assignments. Although we have yet to have the lectures on what is expected of us – I anticipate we would be endeavouring to make a FILM style documentary, rather than a TV style documentary. The difference being that the film will be highlighting the cinematic feel (sound & vision) of our chosen subject .”

They did decide to cover all angles though, so Nigel Barratt and Keith Burton are once again the obligatory ‘talking heads’. We hope to have sight of the final film early next year.

The film team are also preparing a guide and activities for us to take into local schools in February to encourage film making skills and see the mill as a wonderful opportunity to make exciting films.

Deben Decorative and Fine Arts , the local branch of NADFAS has awarded the Tide Mill £500 for an art project. Christine Bull, Friend of the Tide Mill and member of Deben Decorative and Fine Arts , suggested that we apply for a grant to work with local schools. The Mill is popular with artists and we have been running art workshops, art residencies and exhibitions since we re-opened. In 2013 Bee worked with Kyson Primary School on an art project with a group of 20 children, aged 7-11 years, drawing inspiration from the textures and shapes of the mill and translating their sketches into paintings and clay work.

The new project will develop opportunities to be inspired by the Mill, produce an art activity pack, invite a practising artist into each school and resource the school with art materials. An exhibition will be held in the spring.

We are very grateful for this award, which will allow us to develop our learning offers and give young artists valuable creative experiences and new skills.

The end of season party 2014 was held at Shire Hall with over 65 people in attendance to celebrate another very successful season. A strong turn out of The Friends and their partners, wardens, trustees, vice patron Tony Hubbard and his wife and some new faces enjoyed an evening of chat, drinks and treats baked with Tide Mill flour.

Lord Framingham, patron of the Tide Mill, and his wife joined the party. He said once again how proud he is of his involvement with the Mill. Chairman Nigel Barratt gave a short speech outlining the successes of the season with increased visitor numbers (including school trips), excellent flour sales and memorable special events. His list of thanks included vice-chairman Bob Spillett for his committed hard work, the volunteer engineers for their impressive maintenance work and also The Friends.

Issues for the next season include strengthening of The Friends groups focusing on fund raising, leaflet distribution and guiding.
